How to Capture a Custom Selection on Screen?
In case you want to capture a specific part of your screen, use the Capture Selected Window button on the toolbar. The action will change your pointer into a cross-hair. Alternatively, you can use Shift + Command + 4 for taking a screengrab of a custom selection.

How to Change Image Format of Screenshot?
The default image format of screenshots taken on macOS is .png. These files are quite heavy. You can change these .png files to .jpg format. This is easy to do. Go to Launchpad > Other > Terminal and type the following code inside the new window:
defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg
If asked, enter your password. Now restart the computer to make changes effective. Now your future screenshots will be saved in the preferred format you specified, which means .jpg. In near future, you can always change it back by applying the same method.
