How Technology Helps In Having Good Mental Health?

Posted on September 18, 2016

Technology has made our lives easier in many ways. Internet, cars, cellphones, healthcare advances such as MRI machines, lasers and computers that even help map out the perfect health regime.

The list goes on and it grows every day. However, many of these things have something in common other than they can make our lives easier: we also don’t move when we use them!

We sit in our car to work, sit at our desk and work, get back in our car at the end of the day and then probably relax on the couch watching TV for much of the night. None of these activities are conducive to a healthy active lifestyle. Now, of course no one can stay moving all day.

Sedentary activities, such as relaxing, are a part of a healthy lifestyle but too much sitting does two things that have the potential to affect us negatively. One is obvious, remaining sedentary if not coupled with reduced caloric intake can lead to weight gain.

The problem with extreme weight gain is that it puts more pressure on all your joints and your feet take the brunt of that weight. Second, studies have linked sitting for long periods of time with increased insulin resistance (Study links at end of article).

So the bottom line is that if you sit for long periods of time consistently you have an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

Now, all this negative information doesn’t mean you should swear off technology. In fact, technology has also helped us design and create things that aide people in staying fit.  New exercise machines, learning more about the body and how it works, better shoes to support our activities and more.

Many of these technological advances are even making their way into your friendly corner pharmacy, with things like blood pressure monitors and mapping computers.  But don’t be lulled into a false sense of security.

All this conveniently located technology is no replacement for regular doctor, specialist and chiropodist visits.

While these machines are helpful, they are just tools and nothing beats the experience and knowledge of a trained Councillor.  So whether it’s your blood pressure, sugar level, don’t rely solely on your friendly neighborhood pharmacy.
