Govt Blocks 32 Websites Including Vimeo And DailyMotion
Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) said to the court that the content on the websites were security threats for the country.
A government official from DoT, confirmed the news:
“We have blocked some websites, as there were serious national security concerns.”
The major websites that came under the department’s hammer are the popular video streaming platforms Vimeo and DailyMotion among others. However, some of them later were unblocked as they removed objectionable content from the website.
Official sources said that the websites were under scanner as they were being used to spread news about ISIS terrorists who were fighting allied forces in Afghanistan and Iraq. Following the content, Mumbai ATS approached the honorable court with a plea to ban these websites.
BJP’s IT Cell National Head Arvind Gupta also said:
“The websites that have been blocked were based on an advisory by Anti Terrorism Squad, and were carrying anti-India content from ISIS.”
Meanwhile, DoT circulated a list of 32 websites to be blocked on court’s order. The list also went viral on Twitter and Facebook.
