Interior and Cargo capacity

It’s all gold, not only glitters!

Subaru outback is quite a spacious vehicle with supportive seating. When it comes to legroom and shoulder room, there is no one to beat Subaru outback. The seating of the outback is relaxing and the armrests are well-cushioned. The vehicle has been designed to accommodate five people.

All that being said, the car is not as fancy. There is not much to add to the ornamental worth of the interior. However, the outback compensates its lack in style with extra cargo space.

Subaru outback has 36 cubic feet of space which increases to 73 cubic feet if the second row seats are folded. So, if you are a person that often goes on road trips then this vehicle is a match for you.

Exterior and Dimensions

The exterior of Subaru outback is similar to that of any other station wagons. However, it is better than most station wagons and even some SUVs because of its excellent features. The outback comes with a liberal body cladding and rook racks that give off a feeling of sturdiness.

The outback has 8.7 inches of ground clearance. With 3600 pounds of weight it outweighs VW Golf Alltrack. It is also the lengthiest vehicle of its class with 189.6 inches of length making parking an ordeal.

Following are some features you should know about the exterior of Subaru outback:

  • Roof Rails
  • Fog Lamp (unavailable in base 2.5i)
  • Body-Color Door Handles
  • Projector-Beam Halogen Headlights

Engine and Transmission

When buying a Subaru outback, you need to you need to know that it’s a hybrid and hence it offers two engine options viz. 2.5 L boxer 4 or 3.6 L boxer 6.

The former although being slow is quite economic, whereas, the latter is impressively powerful and thus, consumes a lot of fuel. Whatever engine you choose depending upon your preferences, one thing that’ll remain constant is the quickness of the vehicle.

The outback, as the name subtly suggests, is designed for off-road cruise.

Subaru is among the few automotive manufactures that use the flat engine. 175 hp and 174 pounds-feet of torque is produced by the 2.5 L flat 4 engine. This might not seem all that powerful considering the weight of the outback, however, it is not much a concern.

After all, this lack of power is compensated with its impressive fuel economy. On the other hand, the 3.6 L flat 6 engine produces 256 hp and 247 pounds-feet of torque.

Acceleration of the 2.5 L flat 4 engine is not impressive. In fact, it takes 9.4 seconds to reach from a standstill to 60 mph making it quite slow compared to other competing vehicles.

However, the 3.6L boxer-6 engine is quite better in this regard taking 7.5 seconds to reach 60 mph from a standstill.

Handling & Braking

The outback offers a smooth ride. The stiffened suspension setup makes driving at slow and fast speeds a steady experience. The vehicle is quite agile and the high sidewall tires on 18-inch wheels make even off-road drives totally smooth.

The station wagon comes with 12.4-inch brake rotors up front and 11.8 rotors at the back. The braking is average compared to others in this category. It takes 126 feet to come to a halt from 70 mph.

Fuel Economy

The Subaru outback mpg varies considerably with the engine you choose. With a 2.5 L boxer 4, the mileage is quite impressive offering 25 miles per gallon in city. On the other hand, the 3.6L boxer-6 engine, being much more powerful, offers lesser mileage.

Safety

The safety of this vehicle can be judged by the fact that NHTSA gave it a 5-star rating and it was also the Top Safety Pick + from IIHS.
