Subaru is the only brand which offers 4WD on all its cars except in BRZ. Subaru Impreza comes with two body styles – Sedan & Hatch. Just add $500 in every variant of the car to get the Hatchback version.
2019 Subaru Impreza
Driving and Performance:
Impreza uses a engine wth 2.0-liter four-cylinder mill that churns 152-hp and 145 lb.-ft. of torque. We cannot expect this to be a WRX, but acceleration is dull. Impreza comes with the option of either a 5-speed manual or a CVT, which takes $1300 more to opt. The ride is relaxed and AWD keeps this car steady.
The Impreza sedan with a CVT is the most efficient, returning an EPA-estimated 28 miles per gallon in the city and 38 mpg highway, while the best five-speed manual can give 24/32 and 24/31 mpg, respectively.
Exterior:
Impreza design has evolved considerably over time. Starting from the GC8’s as the first-generation model, all the way to the fourth generation much has changed in the looks department.
The details are important, however. The Sport-tech sedan has an added rear spoiler on the truck which reminds us about the STI but obstructs the rear visibility. There was no need for it as the performance of the car is not at the level where the spoiler would make a difference.
We are little skeptical of the 18-inch wheels but there are other options of 16 or 17-inches which help enhance the persona of the vehicle. Bright color with the correct option of Rims, this looks good!
Interior:
The radio controls, touchscreen interface, and climate control knobs are generally easy to read and use, and the secondary top screen is surprisingly useful. Large fonts, high-resolution screens, and simple button structures ease the learning curve dramatically.
Impreza offers plenty of room inside for up to five occupants, but at 12.3 cubic feet, the sedan’s trunk space falls on the lower end of the class. The Chevrolet Cruze has 14.8 cubic feet, Honda Civic has 15.1 cubic feet & Toyota Corolla offers 13 cubic feet.
That story changes with the Impreza hatchback’s 55.3 cubic feet of maximum trunk space, which beats the Cruze hatchback’s 47.2, the Civic hatchback’s 46.2 and the Volkswagen Golf’s 52.7 cubic feet.
Safety:
Safety-wise, the Impreza nails it. The NHTSA gives the Impreza a rare five-star rating across the board, and the IIHS gives it top scores in all of its tests, including a new passenger-side small-overlap frontal test.
These scores help Impreza earn from IIHS a Top Safety Pick Plus rating. However, the halogen headlights on base, Premium, and Sports models rate only Marginal compared to the Acceptable and Good scores posted by the two levels of LEDs available with Limited trim. The Good headlamps swivel into corners.
The car does have all modern crash prerequisites which can be seen as the Subaru has a stellar record in safety ratings. Every 2018 Impreza comes standard with a backup camera, seven airbags, anti-lock brakes, & stability control.
Premium, Sport, and Limited models can be optioned with Subaru’s Eyesight suite of safety equipment including adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warnings with automatic emergency braking (including in reverse), blind-spot monitors, active lane control, rear cross-traffic alerts.
Final Verdict
Subaru marketing strategy has inscribed the word “BOLD” on the website for the model, but that isn’t exactly true. The car has looked the same for a few years now.
2019 Impreza Hatchback price starts at just over $19,000, at which price Honda Civic already has established itself as the winner; its handling and the powerful engine make it fun to drive and have higher MPG ratings than Impreza.
The Civic might not have an AWD system but its interior is top notch. People looking for a commuter car with all-wheel drive for occasional fun-times will appreciate this car.
