Kindle Unlimited

What is Kindle Unlimited and How Does it Work?

Posted on November 11, 2024

Amazon’s Kindle e-book readers are widely loved and incredibly convenient, especially for avid readers. Amazon’s subscription service lets you access millions of books at no extra cost. A subscription service like this saves you from paying separately for every book, as it comes with a simple monthly fee. If you’re subscribed to Kindle Unlimited, you can enjoy these books without any additional charges.

What is Kindle Unlimited?

Kindle Unlimited opens the door to over a million titles, thousands of audiobooks, and select magazine subscriptions, all accessible from any device. Launched in 2014, it has grown from a niche offering for book enthusiasts into a thriving digital subscription service.

Think of it as Netflix but for books. Instead of buying each title outright from the Kindle store, you get temporary access to a vast library of selected works—and you don’t even need a Kindle to enjoy it. With genres spanning romance, history, humor, sci-fi, travel, and self-help, there’s a little something for every interest and mood.

How does Kindle Unlimited work?

Signing up for Kindle Unlimited is quick and straightforward through its webpage.  Amazon has made the process as seamless as possible.

All it takes is a monthly subscription (which you can cancel anytime), and you’re ready to start reading. Just pick a book, click download, and within seconds, it’s available on your device.

And no, owning a Kindle isn’t necessary. Simply download the Kindle app from your phone or tablet’s app store. From there, you can browse, download, and read titles directly. Any books you’ve selected through your browser will also show up in the app, keeping everything in one place.

How much does Kindle Unlimited cost?

Kindle Unlimited costs £9.49 a month, but if you’re a first-time user, you can take advantage of a 30-day free trial. After the trial, the subscription automatically renews at the same monthly rate unless you decide to cancel.

There are also occasional discounts available with Audible, Amazon’s audiobook service. For details about Audible, check out our guide. To see if Kindle Unlimited has any special offers running, visit the sign-up page on Amazon.

Is Kindle Unlimited included in Amazon Prime?

Kindle Unlimited isn’t part of an Amazon Prime membership. While Prime offers perks like same-day or next-day delivery, exclusive deals, and access to Prime Video and Amazon Music, Kindle Unlimited operates as a separate subscription.

You don’t need a Prime account to subscribe to Kindle Unlimited. However, if you buy a new Kindle device, it typically comes with three months of Kindle Unlimited at no extra cost (a value of £28.47). During this period, you can explore a huge collection of e-books. After the trial, the subscription automatically renews at £9.49 per month unless canceled.

What devices does Kindle Unlimited work with?

Kindle Unlimited is compatible with all Kindle devices, and you can also access titles on your phone, tablet, or laptop using the free Kindle app. The app works on Android, iPhones, iPads, tablets, computers, and Amazon Fire tablets. This makes it easy to read your favorite books or enjoy the latest audiobooks wherever and whenever you like.

How do you cancel Kindle Unlimited?

Canceling your subscription is simple and can be done anytime. If you cancel, you’ll still have access to your benefits until the next billing date. However, if you’re canceling a pre-paid subscription, it ends immediately, and unused months won’t be refunded.
