If archives are to be believed, Mattye Whyte, a teacher in Arkansas, was the first person who wrote the bigwigs in the education system to mark a special day in the year to celebrate teachers. The initiative took over 27 years to happen and finally, National Teacher Appreciation Day became the official national day.
National Teacher Appreciation Day Timeline
In 1857, America forms its first National Education Association. In the year 1963, Eleanor Roosevelt proposed the 81st Congress to proclaim a national day for teachers. In 1980, the country marks the first National Teacher Appreciation Day on March 7.
To make the day worth celebrating, the Global Teacher Prize institutes an annual one million U.S.D. award to the best teacher from any country. in the year 2014.
