Aadhaar-PAN Linking: The Synopsis
In a milestone judgment the honorable Supreme Court of India passed a ruling that allowed linking of PAN with Aadhaar. The apex court had made judgment during the hearing of a case pertaining to constitutional validity of Aadhaar.
The apex court made Aadhaar number mandatory to file income tax return, apply for a new PAN and avail subsidies and social security benefit offered from central and state governments.
Online Methods to Link PAN with Aadhaar Number
On June 30th this year amid Pandemic Union government extended the deadline of linking PAN with Aadhaar till March 31, 2021. In case a PAN card holder fails to his/ her PAN with Aadhaar after the deadline, the PAN will become inoperative. Once your PAN card will go inactive, you won’t be able to execute the financial transactions where PAN is mandatory.
Here are the different ways to link your PAN with your Aadhaar number. It includes both online and offline ways to link your Aadhaar number with PAN.
1. For users already registered at income tax e-filing website:
If your income tax returns are already being filed by you or your tax consultant, probably your Aadhaar is already linked to PAN. Since you have already quoted your Aadhaar while filing your income tax returns for previous assessment years, income tax department by default links it as they have details of both your PAN and Aadhaar.
2. For non- registered users:
If you’re not willing to create an account at the e-filing website but want to link Aadhaar to PAN, there is an easy way to do it.
Visit the home page of e-filing website or the income tax website. Here you will find a hyperlink ‘Link Aadhaar’.
On click, you will see a new form appearing where you have to fill in details like PAN, Aadhaar number, Name as per Aadhaar.
In case you have only year of birth on your Aadhaar card, check the option that says ‘I have only year of birth in Aadhaar card’.
Now enter the captcha code and click on submit. Like the first method, you will get a success message showing your PAN is successfully linked to Aadhaar upon successful submission of the request.
3. By sending an SMS to PAN Service providers
This method can be handy if you are unable to link your PAN and Aadhaar using the e-filing website. The method is approved by CBDT. You can link your PAN with Aadhaar by sending a simple SMS to authorized PAN Service providers NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited or UTI Infrastructure Technology and Services Limited (UTIITL).
Send an SMS in a specific format using a keyword to the either 567678 or 56161 in following format:
UIDPAN<12 digit Aadhaar><10 digit PAN>
Suppose your Aadhaar number is 555577773333 and PAN is BBPPA9999Q. Then you are required to send sms to 567678 or 56161 as:
UIDPAN 555577773333 BBPPA9999Q
The service is free from the providers but you have to pay for the SMS charges levied by your telecom operator.
Manual Method for PAN Aadhaar Linking:
You can also link your Aadhaar number to PAN by visiting a service centre of PAN Service provider, NSDL or UTIITSL near you. Submit the form ‘Annexure-I’ along with PAN card and Aadhaar card as supporting documents.
To avail the service, you have to pay to the provider for the service. For any correction made to the PAN details a fee of Rs 110 is charged. For correcting Aadhaar details, you will be charged Rs 25.
