South Korean tech magnet LG electronics is going into a joint venture with HERE technologies to develop self-driving automobile solutions.
LG said in an official noting that known navigation solution provider HERE offers its solutions to nearly 100 million automobiles around the globe and would indeed be an ideal partner for LG’s “connected cars” project.
“We’re excited to present a new standard for autonomous mobile communication solutions in cooperation with Here, which has unsurpassed cutting-edge automotive guidance technology,” said Lee Woo-jong, president of LG’s Vehicle Components Company. “With partners like Here, LG can continue to advance the next generation of connected car technologies to help prepare automakers for the self-driving era.”
HERE is the maker of “HD Live Map” which is capable of street signs, street lamps and other obstacles on roads, a key technology needed for autonomous vehicles.
LG noted in its briefing:
“Through the cooperation with HERE, which holds top-notch mapping technology, we will set a new standard of the communication solution installed in self-driving cars.”
LG Electronics stated further that it has been one of the top players in the field of the telematics since 2013. Telematics is a solution that combines various communications technologies for automobiles.
