Aadhaar May Be Mandatory For New Mobile Connections : TRAI

Soon, you may be asked to furnish your Aadhaar Card details while purchasing a new pre-paid mobile connection. State own regulator TRAI has sent recommendations to Department of Telecom (DoT) to allow KYC of Aadhaar as one of the valid documents for buying a new mobile connection. Authority sent the recommendations after discussing it with in details with the Solicitor General and the Attorney General.

TRAI chairman R S Sharma told PTI:

“We have sent the recommendations in addition to others that electronic KYC of Aadhaar should be one of the valid documents for granting the mobile connection.”

Once the government finalizes the recommendations, Aadhaar card biometric data will be used for instant identity verification for a new mobile connection. It’s obvious that it would speed up the verification process as everything will be done online. It’ll also reduce the use of paper during the verification process.
